We arrived at the canyon and made our way inside to this amazing canyon formation, known for its surreal orange limestone carved canyon passages. Our guide was a Navajo Native American named Tyler. We made our way to the canyon, down a wide arroyo that is where the torrent of water flows to the canyon during the flash floods, and is responsible for the formation of the North and South Antelope Canyons. Weather is constantly monitored to prevent a tragedy like that from ever happening again. Because of that, ever since, all tours are guided by a trained guide from The Navajo nation. The storm was 15 miles away, but sent a torrent of water through the canyon, killing all but the guide, who barely survived. This because in 1997, 11 people on a tour of the canyon died in a flash flood that hit them. Our tour group used Antelope Slot Canyon Tours for our tour of South Antelope Canyon.Īfter getting out group together, we loaded into four nicely air conditioned vans for our trip to South Antelope Canyon.Īll tours of North and South Antelope Canyon are run by The Navajo Nation, and a Navajo guide is required to tour the canyon.
